Biometric Signs and their Advantages and Disadvantages

In 2020, biometric authentication and verification became integral to the modern technology landscape. This valuable addition to the tech family has a plethora of uses that modern users cannot ideally comprehend today. It has widespread in more ways than the modern users of it fully understand. These are very commonly put to use at the airport to get checked at the lengthy security checkout lines, at doctor’s offices to ensure confidentiality of medical information and records, and times for the simple task of unlocking one phone to respond to a message.

The most common types of biometric devices and their verification applications have the requirement of physiological biometrics such as face recognition, thumbprints, and even voice recognition. But these are not the only keys to getting through, there is a wide range of technological systems that uses behavioural biometrics as well. For example, this type of biometric data could be used to help users navigate to search engine pages on the internet, and how and what to click on, even if it’s a phone or a laptop and even to be guided to a website which you so frequently use and get accustomed to while at work, a biosecurity sign still creates a biometric profile of the relevant users that could be used for identification and tracking purposes.

One major advantage of these biosecurity signs is that they provide high levels of assurance that a particular person is real by verifying a tangible object. The situation in most cases is such that the accounts and data entries of various users such as PINs and passwords and personal identification information have been breached. This means that millions of accounts out here, are accessible to fraudsters. However, the introduction of biometric security to the process adds what we call a roadblock to fraudsters that only a real authorized user could navigate.

Additionally, biometrics can only be provided by living, breathing people and at this point, a robot would have a hard time passing an iris scan. Another major advantage is that the authentication process in biometric security takes a highly technical standpoint, for the point of view of a user, these technological innovations have proven to be incredibly fast! Placing one’s finer on a scanner and unlocking an account within a matter of seconds rather than typing a long password with multiple special characteristics. Add the chances of forgetting a password to this list and it makes biometric security an even more enticing option.

One of the biggest disadvantages of biometric security is the cost. Since this is an advanced security system, it requires a relatively large investment. A survey conducted in 2018 depicted that 67% of IT professionals cite cost as one of the biggest hurdles they face when switching to biometric security systems.  The process of transitioning to a biometric security authentication system is not the only part a company must pay for, that is, as research shows there is a necessity to upgrade the current systems so that they could be used to support the biometric security authentication on their relevant devices.
